The Opportunity

Our Litigation & Employment Law team has an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled, results-driven paralegal who excels at practical problem-solving and leverages technology effectively in a collaborative environment.

Reporting to the Manager of the Employment Law Department, this role will work closely with TC Energy's in-house litigation and employment attorneys, outside counsel, as well as other internal and external stakeholders, to provide paralegal and eDiscovery support services to TC Energy, its subsidiaries and affiliates.

The Paralegal will be responsible for providing litigation and arbitration paralegal and eDiscovery support, including the identification, preservation, collection, review, production and overall management of e-Discovery records. Additionally, this role will provide general paralegal, administrative and organizational support to the Department.

What you'll do

The successful candidate will need to work both independently and, in a team setting to fulfill the specific responsibilities of the position, which include:

  • Manage and maintain various electronic databases, such as matter management (including opening new matters), document management, e-discovery, Sharepoint, Workday and SAP systems, and answer questions related thereto

  • Support the legal team by scoping, issuing and monitoring legal holds via electronic legal hold system

  • Create and maintain systems for identifying, tracking and organizing large document collections in the pre-litigation phase

  • Conduct custodian interviews to identify sources of records for collection and assist with determining key facts and issues

  • Support all phases of the eDiscovery process, including collection, processing, review and production for both internal and hosted matters

  • Maintain accurate and current documentation of all aspects of discovery projects Including inventory of physical assets under legal hold

  • Communicate with outside counsel and other outside parties as needed

  • Conduct various document searches, factual research and document review

  • Assist attorneys with preparation of documents required for pleadings, depositions, questioning, mediation and trial

  • Coordinate flow of documents between legal professionals, outside counsel, various internal and external stakeholders, and clients at all levels

  • Monitor, track and manage the service of legal documents on TC Energy, its subsidiaries and affiliates

  • Assist attorneys in reviewing outside counsel/third party vendor invoices

  • Coordinate, review, and maintain matter status, including diarizing any tasks and deliverables

  • Provide back up and support to other paralegals and eDiscovery specialists

  • Provide administrative support for Department attorneys.

The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list. The scope of the role may change as necessitated by business demands and additional tasks may be assigned from time to time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Paralegal or legal assistant certificate or diploma from recognized post-secondary institute

  • Minimum of four (4) years' relevant paralegal experience in litigation, eDiscovery and litigation support, including experience supporting the full EDRM lifecycle for litigation

  • Exposure to technical knowledge of eDiscovery processes and software and experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft eDiscovery, network storage familiarity, and other technical resources

  • Knowledge and understanding of the US State and Federal Rules of Civil Procedures, applicable court rules and the litigation process

  • Experience in conducting custodian interviews to determine the existence and location of relevant records as well as assisting lawyers in determining key facts and issues

  • Experience with Team Connect, iManage, Open Text, and Axcelerate Review & Analysis, or other similar systems, is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Complex and cross-border litigation experience is desirable; experience in construction and pipeline industry is an asset

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage complex and dynamic tasks involving various internal and external teams, processes and technologies

  • Attention to detail, effective multi-tasking skills, ability to prioritize competing deadlines and manage several projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and demanding environment

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify continuous improvements in policies and processes and execute on those improvements

  • Exceptional inter-personal and communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to effectively communicate legal and technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel

  • Strong legal drafting skills

  • Quick learner, problem-solver, self-motivated and ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities and bring a solutions-oriented approach to daily tasks.
