AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a paid summer internship within our SciLine department!

SciLine, a free service for journalists that aims to get more scientific evidence into the news, seeks a Data Viz & Graphics Intern to help transform data into clear, compelling graphics that support journalists, especially local TV reporters, with their news coverage. This internship focuses on producing editorial graphics that make scientific evidence accessible in ways that are both accurate and engaging. Collaborating closely with SciLine's Content Manager of TV News, the intern will support SciLine's mission of providing scientific evidence and expertise to enrich U.S. reporting.

What You'll Do



  • Find and turn data into visually compelling graphics for journalists to use in digital stories and newscasts
  • Source, analyze, and work confidently with a wide range of datasets
  • Pitch and develop data-driven stories and graphics for use in SciLine's TV-focused Experts on Camera service
  • Collaborate with SciLine staff on one-off graphics projects
  • Rigorously fact-check data and sources for all graphics produced
  • Support production and data entry for SciLine's TV projects, including Experts on Camera sessions and group media availabilities


Minimum Requirements



  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (or transitioning between the two) at a university/college (data journalism majors preferred)
  • Portfolio of visually and editorially compelling graphics
  • Skilled at presenting data through engaging charts, maps, and full-screen graphics
  • Familiar with interactive data visualization and data analysis tools
  • Able to produce high-quality graphics quickly, including for breaking news
  • Curious, innovative and open to experimenting with new technologies
  • Editorially rigorous, with a commitment to accuracy and high journalistic standards
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with strong project management skills
  • Interest in or enthusiasm about science and its role in the news



Internship Details

This is a remote internship, however, those in or near the D.C. area have the option to work from our D.C. office and attend in-person events, typically 1-2 times per week. This is a 12-week internship, which will run from June 1, 2026 - August 21, 2026. The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is$17.95 per hour.
