Overview

The Senior Electrical Engineer works under general supervision to lead or perform electrical engineering assignments of varying scope and complexity within their area of expertise. This role involves coordinating with architects, engineers, users, and consultants as needed. Responsibilities include establishing design criteria, ensuring the accuracy of drawings, approving or implementing field design changes, and representing the section or department in issue resolution, planning, and work coordination. The primary purpose of this position is to provide in house electrical engineering expertise to efficiently support routine, emergency, and critical projects.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Plan, engineer, and design projects supporting Facilities Capital and Operations & Maintenance budgets, including service centers, commercial buildings, yards, and infrastructure supporting Steam Distribution, Substation Operations, Electrical Operations, IT, and Transportation Operations.
  • Provide engineering support for commercial building and yard electrical systems, including the selection and specification of power equipment such as low and medium voltage switchgear, emergency diesel generators, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
  • Apply thorough knowledge of New York State and New York City Building Codes to perform equipment sizing and detailed electrical calculations, including short circuit, breaker coordination, voltage drop, cable and conduit sizing, and lighting analyses.
  • Review, evaluate, and approve contractor designs, engineering calculations, shop drawings, and technical submittals to ensure compliance with project requirements and standards.
  • Serve as a technical consultant within the organization and, when appropriate, within the industry, providing subject matter expertise in areas of specialization.
  • Conduct conceptual engineering studies and cost benefit analyses to evaluate design alternatives and recommend optimal solutions.
  • Prepare, or direct the preparation of, project budgets and capital appropriation requests.
  • Serve as Section Manager when delegated and act as an expert witness as required.
  • Direct, coordinate, and review the work of architects, designers, engineers, and external architectural/engineering firms to ensure quality, consistency, and timely project delivery.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and eight years of experience in engineering design and application within assigned areas of expertise, or
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and six years of experience in engineering design and application within assigned areas of expertise.

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and six years of experience in engineering design and application within assigned areas of expertise.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Demonstrated motivation, initiative, and strong leadership capabilities, required.
  • Proficient in the NEC, New York State, and New York City Building Codes, with the ability to perform equipment sizing and detailed electrical calculations, including short circuit, breaker coordination, voltage drop, cable and conduit sizing, and lighting analyses, required.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities, supported by a proven record of successful project support, required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all organizational levels, required.
  • Ability to perform required calculations and select electrical equipment in support of Capital and Operations & Maintenance project designs, required.

Licenses and Certifications

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
