Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Exhibition team is seeking a designer to collaborate within the 3D Exhibitions Department, dedicated to supporting several permanent & temporary exhibitions. The designer will report to the Associate Director of Exhibition Design.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Design Exhibition

  • Create detailed plans, layouts, and schematics that optimize the use of exhibition space while ensuring visitor flow and accessibility.
  • Design exhibitions with the understanding that many will travel to other locations, considering standardization of elements, feasibility, durability, and ease of assembly.


Concept Development

  • Work closely with curators and the exhibition team to translate exhibition concepts into 3D design concepts that consider space, architectural features and constraints of galleries or halls.
  • Develop high-quality 3D renderings and physical scale models that visually communicate design concepts and enable collaboration with graphic designers and media teams.

Documentation and Coordination

  • Support the preparation of comprehensive exhibition design packages, including design drawings, specifications, and other materials required to facilitate the bidding process for 3D fabrication.
  • Art-direct the in-house preparators in the creation of models for the exhibitions.

The expected salary range for the Exhibition Designer is $65,000/annual - $75,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Exhibition Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Scenic or Theater Design, Museum Studies (with a design or spatial focus) or another relevant field.
  • Museum or Scenic Design Experience: Designing visitor-based experiences either for museums or scenic environments; interpreting ideas into spatial designs.
  • Architectural / Spatial Design: Space planning within architectural constraints; familiarity with accessibility standards (ADA compliance) and building codes.
  • Fabrication & Installation Oversight: Direct experience working with fabricators and contractors; supervising or coordinating on-site installations.
  • 3D Visualization & Design Tools: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, Vectorworks, or similar; rendering software knowledge; experience creating physical scale models and using 3D printing/CNC technologies.
  • Lighting & Media Integration: Understanding of exhibition or scenic lighting principles and audiovisual integration; experience coordinating with lighting designers and AV specialists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Museum Exhibition Planning & Design, Architecture, or Scenic / Theater Design.
  • Previous experience working in a Museum.
  • Strategizing for artifact safety and proper environmental conditions.
  • Project management experience such as organizational and communication skills, problem solving, time management, presentation, technical & documentation skills.
  • Designing and executing permanent, temporary, or traveling exhibitions.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
