Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in business intelligence or data warehousing. An associate degree in a related field may substitute for the bachelor's. Certifications and additional experience may substitute for education requirements.

Overview

Under general supervision, the Business Intelligence Specialist - Advanced designs, develops, and implements comprehensive BI solutions. This role leads efforts in data modeling, ETL optimization, and performance tuning to support executive decision-making and cross-functional data needs. This class differs from Business Intelligence Specialist-Intermediate in that an incumbent of the latter performs the administrative and technical duties related to the design, development and maintenance of business intelligence technology solutions under immediate supervision. This class differs from that of Business Intelligence Specialist-Lead in that an incumbent of the latter leads or supervises staff or independently works on the design and implementation of business intelligence technology best practices, coordinates multiple projects while optimizing resource utilization and ensures proper controls are implemented to promote system stability.

Responsibilities

1. Design and develop BI reports, dashboards, and data visualizations based on business requirements.
2. Analyze data sources and develop logical and physical data models for reporting and analytics.
3. Hands-on experience with data warehousing technologies and practices.
4. Implement and optimize ETL workflows, ensuring performance and data accuracy.
5. Maintain security controls and access to BI systems and data layers.
6. Lead data investigations and resolve system issues related to BI tools and environments.
7. Prepares and executes fixes for common data quality and cleansing issues (trim whitespace, normalize dates, correct code sets) and coordinate corrections with data owners. Collaborate with technical and business teams to deliver integrated BI solutions.
8. Create BI roadmaps, aligning backlog with business value, estimating effort, and communicating status/risk to executives.
9. Train end-users and mentor junior BI staff on reporting best practices and tool usage.
10. Document system architecture, report specifications, and change history. Stewardship of data catalogs/lineage.
