Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, employing more than 3,200 people and providing millions of rides a year through an integrated network of buses and light rail, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.
How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:
The Special Events Temporary staff are responsible for supporting stadium events by means of customer service and public safety. The staff will work at 120+ annual stadium events consisting of Twins, Vikings, Gopher Football, MNUFC games and other miscellaneous events. The incumbent will also assist with rail shutdowns and other miscellaneous events not able to be filled by full-time employees.

What you would do in this job

Work at Stadium Events

  • Monitor rail grade crossing at public crosswalks
  • Assist customers at Ticket Vending Machines and Rail Smartcard Validators
  • Staff fare inquiry points to check if riders have the proper fare
  • Give wayfinding directions to the public
  • Manage queue areas
  • Make announcements using Public Address Systems like megaphones or rail platform speakers

Staff closed platform(s) during rail shutdowns
  • Enter trains to ensure riders know that stop is the last stop for the line
  • Inform rides where to catch replacement bus to complete their trip
  • Answer rider questions
  • Ensure signage is properly displayed
  • Verify platform is properly closed to public

Provide Support Staffing During Large Initiatives
  • Assist with Fare Change Outreach
  • Staff stations during new line launches
  • Attend outreach events
  • Provide support to departments to fill ad hoc requests

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

High School diploma/GED with one year of experience in personal management and customer service

Previous experience working for Metropolitan Council-Metro Transit



What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Pedestrian flows at major sporting venues
  • How bus bridge operations work
  • Metro Transit Fares
  • How transit operations work at major sporting venues
  • Knowledge of the Metro Transit system including but not limited to; all current and future LRT lines names, current schedules and main platform locations; fares and fare enforcement; safety rules, regulations, emergency procedures; transit parking ramp details and locations.
  • Public speaking to individuals, small or large crowds while inspiring confidence and taking charge of a situation and maintaining control in a professional manner
  • De-escalation techniques
  • Work in all weather conditions and times of day
  • Work independently and professionally without direct supervision
  • Keep composure during high stressful situations
  • Address a high-volume of customer issues and questions about the transit system throughout shift.

Salary Range
The full salary range for this position is $29.39 - $47.67 Hourly or $61,131.20 - $99,153.60 Annually.
The hire rate for this position is $32.53/ hourly

Work Environment:
Work is performed at Metro Transit facilities and stations. Work will require being outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Position has exposure to working near moving parts, airborne particles from fumes, and vibration. Some travel is required between work sites.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council , you must pass a background check, which verifies education, employment, and criminal background check. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
