GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Sustainability Specialist performs moderately difficult administrative work requiring a great deal of judgment in coordinating, promoting, and implementing activities related to solid waste, recycling, energy, and/or other areas related to Sustainability. This position is responsible for receiving, reviewing, processing, and issuing business licenses. This work is performed under general supervision - the incumbent normally receives little instruction on routine work and general instruction on new projects and assignments; work is reviewed periodically and is evaluated through meetings, review of programs, and results achieved.


Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists the Sustainability Manager in facilitating the Keep Winter Park Beautiful Board & Sustainable (KWPBS) by coordinating, promoting, and implementing various projects within the City's Sustainability Action Plan (SAP).

Attends KWPBS meetings and other community and state organization meetings related to assigned programs.

Coordinates sustainability division activities related to commercial and residential solid waste, recycling, energy consumption, and other areas as assigned. This includes providing customer service for city businesses and residents.

Assists with the preparation of briefs, brochures, newsletters, and fact sheet news releases for residents as assigned.

Assists in collecting, processing, and analyzing data for solid waste, recycling energy, and other aspects of the SAP to include the annual updates.

Participates in the coordination, promotion, and presentation of educational programs, incentives, pilot studies, and case studies related to solid waste, recycling and energy, and/or other programs.

Maintains public records accurately including scanning, filing, retention, and disposal of records.

Researches, collects, and compiles data for administrative and operational reports; enters information into accounting and word processing computer applications and updates computer files.

Performs other work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and business correspondence.

Working knowledge of filing systems, design, maintenance, and other office procedures.

Working knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, statistics, and their applications.

Skill in organization, time management, and records management.

Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, computers, and software, including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Ability to learn pertinent codes, laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Ability to maintain focus and flexibility with frequent interruptions; ability to follow up and monitor the status of ongoing projects.

Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner, multi-task, organize workload, meet deadlines, follow up, and take tasks to completion.

Ability to collect and analyze data, and present results in a manner that is clear, concise, and easily understood by the general public.

Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evening and weekend hours.

Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Ability to make critical and difficult decisions with some direction that conforms to the policies and procedures of the City and the Department.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.

This position is performed with working knowledge - the incumbent can recall and apply important and commonly used information from relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field.


Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Sustainability Specialist I

Bachelor's degree or currently enrolled in such a program with coursework in any of the following areas: sustainability, environmental science, public relations, communications, marketing journalism, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of two years of related experience. Related experience in a government, not-for-profit, or for-profit environment is preferred.

Sustainability Specialist II

Four years of education from an accredited college or university in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Alternatively, two years of experience in a Sustainability Specialist I position or a related role.

Possess a certificate in both grant writing and Program Management.

Demonstrated event planning/management experience.

Two years of experience overseeing and developing sustainability programs and initiatives, such as the city's energy conservation program and green business recognition program.

Must participate in various networking events and meetings, including the USDN and SSDN Director Network meetings, and engage in local working groups like the East Regional Planning Council and Orange County Landfill Quarterly Update meetings where data submittal is required.

Sustainability Specialist III

Four years at an accredited college or university in a related field, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, along with 2-3 certifications in the sustainability field or related areas, such as True Advisor and/or grant writing (technical skills).

Alternatively, Five years of experience in a Sustainability Specialist II or related position.

Alternatively, Five years of experience in a Sustainability Specialist I or related field, along with a Master's Degree.

Possess a certificate in LEED GA or GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) (Global Sustainability Reporting/Economic Social Governance Data).

Demonstrated event planning/management experience.

Experience managing interns and leading university (Rollins/UCF) student projects.

Ability to execute independent sustainability projects without aid from the Sustainability Manager.

Proficiency in updating data in the Sustainability Action Plan and Key Performance Indicators for the Sustainability Division independently.

Capable of writing grants and submitting them to the Sustainability Manager without assistance.

Three years of experience overseeing and developing sustainability programs and initiatives, such as the city's waste diversion program and green business recognition program.

Willingness to attend the USDN and SSDN Director Network meetings, as well as participate in local working groups like the East Regional Planning Council and Orange County Landfill Quarterly Update meetings where data submittal is required.

In-house experience requirements may be waived or modified by the Natural Resources and Sustainability Director if the applicant can demonstrate that he or she possesses ALL required skills and certifications necessary for a particular position.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License, Class E or higher.

Note: All certifications must be current at the time of application and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical

This is light work requiring the exertion of 0 - 20 pounds of force occasionally and 0 - 10 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition objects.

Ability to traverse about an ADA-accessible office setting, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to remain stationary at a keyboard for extended periods of time and continuously operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer.

Ability to manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements repetitively.

Tasks are regularly performed in an office setting without frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Sensory

Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one's surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
