The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Genetic Counseling Assistant to join our team in a full time position within the division of Clinical Genetics. Columbia University Irving Medical Center's Department of Pediatrics is a world leader in providing care for children. Our mission areas include Healthcare, Education and Research. We offer care for our patients in over 25 specialty areas as well as individualized care for complex cases. Our Residency, Fellowship and Graduate programs are among the best in the Nation. Our Clinical, Translational and Basic Science research features collaborations across specialties and stretches from the bench to bedside. We also have several active Clinical trials available to our patients. This position will support the department by providing clinical and administrative support to our Clinical Genetics team.

Responsibilities



  • Assist with pre-visit preparation, including the collection of relevant medical records, lab reports, and patient intake forms.
  • Assist in processing, packaging and shipping specimens and preparation of samples for genetic testing in a timely manner.
  • Obtain and coordinate insurance pre-authorization for specialized laboratory testing.
  • Scan and upload documents into the electronic medical record system.
  • Coordinate collection of consent forms and samples from patients for virtual appointments.
  • Perform appointment and testing data entry into clinical database.
  • Mail out result letters to patients.
  • Regularly check and order genetic testing supplies and kits to ensure they are fully stocked.
  • Make reminder phone calls for upcoming patient appointments, as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling research patient appointments, as needed.
  • Assist with projects that streamline patient record collection and storage, as needed.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience required.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Two years of related experience.


Other Requirements



  • Extremely organized with a high attention to detail, with specific attention paid to accurately recording data.
  • Familiar with medical terminology and laboratory testing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must be comfortable working independently and with teams.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and flexibility.
