Summary

Supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing custodial services to campus facilities. Ensures that central office, training, classroom, student centers, recreation, and childcare facilities are suitable for use by complying with cleanliness and safety requirements.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Custodial Supervisor is a labor intensive, first-line supervisory position, responsible for supervising, coordinating, and reviewing the work of a large custodial staff assigned to perform a variety of custodial and routine maintenance duties across all campus property. The position is accountable for efficient and effective use of assigned staff, supplies, equipment, and time to provide optimum service. To be considered for this position, prospective incumbents must demonstrate the ability to optimize the use of staff through efficient allocation of work, conduct quality assurance and performance appraisals, and administer an operating budget, and participate in custodial work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties, as assigned:

  1. Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of staff responsible for providing custodial and general maintenance within the custodial organization. Ensures high levels of staff productivity by reviewing inspections, reports, and physically observing work performed.
  2. Develops and conveys work schedules for custodial staff by identifying and interpreting academic calendars, activities, budgets, and amount of productive work time available.
  3. Provides supervisory support to assigned staff to ensure they have necessary supplies and tools to complete work assignments. Obtains supplies and working equipment for use by custodians.
  4. Participates in the selection of custodial staff. Provides or coordinates staff training. Works with employees to learn additional skills and correct deficiencies.
  5. Recommends and assists in the implementation of department goals and objectives. Establishes schedules and methods for providing custodial and general maintenance services. Implements policies and procedures.
  6. Participates in preparation and administration of custodial budgets. Submits budget recommendations, monitors expenditures, prepare estimates for costs of unanticipated events and special assignments. Prepares various reports on operations and activities.
  7. Confers with building administrators regarding the care and cleaning of facilities. Schedules night (and day) custodial staff. Prepares and conducts training on proper cleaning procedures, work working techniques, and related issues.
  8. Schedules and supervises project teams such as, but not limited to floor crews. Sets up major cleaning to minimize interruption of work and student activities.
  9. Supervises and participates in maintaining records, performing a variety of general office tasks. Serves as liaison between site administrators and custodial staff.
  10. Prepares routine reports for internal and external agency use. Participates in the process of developing and implementing mandated safety training programs such as training on MSDS, blood borne pathogens, equipment usage etc.
  11. May perform light maintenance. Prepares and submits work orders. May perform the duties of a Custodian in urgent or absentee situations.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  13. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 - Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Knowledge and Skills
  1. The position requires thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial and general maintenance.
  2. Requires thorough knowledge of the principles and processes used in running a complete custodial system on an institutional scale.
  3. Requires a working knowledge of effective time-management practices.
  4. Requires a working knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and applicable work rules.
  5. Requires considerable skill in using the full range of equipment used in custodial work.
  6. Requires an in-depth knowledge of the facilities used by the District. Requires considerable knowledge of chemical safety, use and handling.
  7. Requires sufficient knowledge of work hazards and safety practices to conduct training of Custodians.
  8. Requires basic report writing and record keeping skills.
  9. Requires sufficient knowledge of and skill at using personal computer applications such as spreadsheets, databases, and e-mail.
  10. Requires sufficient math skills to prepare cost estimates, record and measure volumes and mixtures, and prepare budgets.
  11. Requires sufficient human relations skills to supervise others, review performance, train, and work cooperatively with internal and external customers.

  4. Must be able to select, supervise, train and evaluate staff.
  5. Requires the ability to evaluate and make recommendations regarding the use of custodial products.
  6. Requires the ability to plan, prioritize, and assign work in order to meet yearly schedules and timelines.
  7. Must be able to write and maintain routine and sometimes complex records according to Federal, State, local and District standards.
  8. Must be able to write reports and correspondence.
  9. Requires the ability to work varying work schedules.
Physical Abilities
  1. The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.
  2. Essential functions will vary by position.
  3. Education and Experience
The position requires a High School diploma or equivalent with technical training in building operations and four years of experience in custodial housekeeping trades, including 2 years in a leadership position with an organization having substantial square footage. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

AND

Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid driver license. Requires the ability to obtain First-Aid and CPR certificates within a reasonable time after employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where health and safety considerations exist from occasional physical labor and handling of materials that include waste and blood born pathogens.

Conditions of Employment

This is a permanent, general funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified management position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 3:00 pm to 12:00 am, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule: DG-3)

Pay Philosophy:
