ED Patient Access Technician Location: Norfolk, VA Workplace Type: Onsite Job Type: FullTime, Contract Schedule: Multiple shifts available with every other weekend required Available Shifts Admitting Department * 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM * 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Emergency Department * 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, every other weekend * 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM, every other weekend * 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM, every other weekend * 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM, every other weekend Schedules are provided one month in advance. Flexibility to assist with additional coverage is highly valued. Position Overview We are hiring Patient Access Technicians to support a fastpaced hospital environment in both the Emergency Department and Admitting areas. This role is critical to ensuring a smooth patient experience from arrival through registration while supporting revenue cycle accuracy and compliance. Patient Access Technicians serve as the first point of contact for patients and families, providing exceptional customer service while performing registration, insurance verification, and documentation in a highvolume, highpressure clinical setting. Key Responsibilities Patient Registration and Access * Greet patients and families and provide clear instructions upon arrival * Complete patient registration by collecting demographics, insurance information, and required signatures * Perform quick registration, bedside registration, and full registration based on patient care area * Collect copayments and enter authorization and billing information as required * Ensure accurate documentation and data entry in electronic systems Emergency Department Support * Support multiple ED registration areas including Quick Book, Minor Care, and Main Treatment * Perform bedside registration for patients receiving care * Maintain professionalism and empathy when working with trauma cases, mental health patients, and critical situations Admitting and CrossTraining * Register patients arriving for inpatient admissions and surgeries * Verify insurance, collect payments, and process patient obligation forms * Crosstrain to support lab registration and additional patient access locations as needed Administrative and System Support * Utilize EPIC and other computerized systems for registration, verification, and documentation * Collaborate with clinical teams and other departments to ensure efficient patient flow * Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times Required Qualifications * Strong customer service and patientfacing experience * Ability to work in a fastpaced, highvolume, highpressure environment * Basic medical terminology knowledge * Strong computer skills and ability to learn multiple systems * Flexibility to work assigned shifts, including weekends Preferred Qualifications * Previous patient access, registration, or medical reception experience * EPIC experience * Insurance verification or billing knowledge * Experience working in a hospital or emergency department setting Work Environment * Onsite hospital setting supporting Emergency Department and Admitting * High patient volume with frequent interaction with patients, families, and clinical staff * Exposure to trauma cases and acute medical situations * Teambased environment with schedule flexibility required Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Norfolk, VA.
