Overview
Understand and work within the parameters of the department mission and governing values. Enforce state and local laws, ordinances and regulations and perform community service activities. Complete accurate incident reports. Assure a prompt response to calls for service. Protect the campus and campus citizens through a proper balance of foot, bike, and vehicle patrol. This position involves working rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure a prompt response and a proper disposition to all calls for service
  • Prepare quality reports when appropriate
  • Ensure that crimes are properly investigated and that evidence is properly gathered, reported, and preserved
  • Promote the general safety of persons, property, and equipment through a proper balance of vehicle, foot and bicycle patrol
  • Facilitate the safe and smooth flow of traffic by directing traffic and enforcing traffic laws through citations and verbal warnings
  • Special event staffing at games and other high-profile activities
  • Keep the University community informed through appropriate public relations activities
  • Develop a relationship of trust by becoming personally acquainted with members of the campus community
  • Use investigative skills to assist in investigations as directed by the command staff
  • Provide direct support to the chief and other supervisors by completing special assignments and projects
  • Keep the chief informed of any issues sensitive to the department or the university
  • Foster good interdepartmental relations by cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in information exchange
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of laws applicable to current duties, department policies and procedures, University regulations, and police operations. Maintain physical readiness
  • Maintain a minimum of 40 hours of law enforcement training approved by the department and maintain other certifications in areas needed for patrol work (e.g. firearms, ACT, radar/lidar, intoxilyzer, pursuit driving)
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • 21 years of age at time of appointment
  • Utah POST certification as a Law Enforcement Officer or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire is required
  • Must have a Utah driver license or be able to obtain one within a month of start date; Must have an excellent driving record
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Shall not have been convicted of a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude
  • Excellent interpersonal skills consistent with law enforcement on a university campus

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference given for a degree from an accredited university

    • The police officer has the authority to enforce State law and University regulations within the jurisdiction of the University or as directed by the chief
    • The Incumbent may make arrests and may be required to use physical and/or lethal force in the line of duty

Work Environment
The Police Officer position operates in a variety of environments in support of the safety and security of the Utah State University community. Work may be performed indoors in office or administrative settings and outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, or other environmental factors.

Police Officers regularly patrol campus facilities and surrounding areas by foot, bicycle, and motor vehicle. Duties may require responding to emergencies, criminal incidents, medical calls, and other situations that may involve exposure to stressful, hazardous, or unpredictable conditions.

This position requires availability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs. Officers must be able to respond quickly and effectively to situations involving students, faculty, staff, visitors, and members of the public.

Physical Demands
The essential functions of this position require the physical ability to perform a full range of law enforcement activities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
Physical requirements may include the ability to:
  • Stand, walk, or patrol for extended periods of time
  • Run, climb stairs, or pursue individuals on foot when necessary
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and maintain physical balance during law enforcement activities
  • Lift, carry, or move equipment or objects weighing up to approximately 50 pounds
  • Physically restrain or control individuals when required
  • Operate patrol vehicles and other law enforcement equipment
  • Maintain sufficient visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity necessary to safely perform law enforcement duties, including the use of communication devices, defensive equipment, and computer systems

The Police Officer position requires the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in complex, dynamic, and potentially high-stress situations.
Officers must be able to:
