Summary
The Economic Analyst within NYPA's Energy Economics group provides crucial support in guiding NYPA's investment decisions, implementing NYPA's VISION2030 Renewed strategic plan, and advancing NYPA's customers' energy supply decisions through economic modeling and analysis.
New York's energy landscape is rapidly evolving to achieve the targets in the 2025 New York State Energy Plan, delivering an energy system that is "abundant, reliable, affordable, and clean while supporting economic development, equity, and a healthy environment." NYPA established the energy economics group to remain at the forefront of the state's clean energy transition and support the implementation of NYPA's VISION2030 Renewed strategic plan.
The Energy Economics group is an internal economic consulting team responsible for developing NYPA's long-term outlook of the energy industry to inform NYPA's strategic and investment decisions as well as support customer contract negotiations and guide NYPA's positioning in NYISO market reform initiatives and NY PSC proceedings. The Economic Analyst will work closely with the Senior Manager of Energy Economics and broader team in the development of the long-term outlook and performance of internal consulting engagements. This position is responsible for conducting research and analysis on the energy industry, developing and maintaining quantitative models, and creating reports and presentations for a variety of audiences both internal and external. #LI-CJ1
Responsibilities
- Support/Lead in the development and review of complex energy and market valuation/ economic models and run sensitivities in support of NYPA's efforts to prepare a long-term outlook and evaluate new business opportunities
- Develop power flow and production cost analysis and be able to inform management of various system outcomes in terms of production cost savings, congestion analysis, LBMP impact, renewable curtailment, and environmental impacts
- Analyze the impact of a changing regulatory environment on NYPA, its assets, and NYPA's customers
- Perform electric utility and general industry research to identify key utility and business trends and program opportunities
- Provide monthly reports on programs/projects and stakeholder activities
- Participate in industry events, trainings, meetings as needed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- In depth understanding of the North American wholesale energy markets
- Ability to quantify trends impacting the energy markets and summarize information into commercial decisions
- Strong organizational, problem solving and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of NYISO and its planning practices including resource integration studies is preferred
- Hands-on experience with power system analysis software packages such as PSS/e, PSLF, TARA, etc is preferred
- Working knowledge of automation scripts such as Python for development of automation modules preferred
- Knowledge of capacity expansion model for capacity expansion and retirement decisions is preferred
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor's Degree required. Business, economics, finance, electrical engineering or related field with emphasis on power systems is preferred.
- Minimum 4 years of experience with energy and financial modeling preferred
- Direct work experience using production cost models preferred
Physical Requirements
