In the role ofBehavioral Health Principal, you will play a pivotal role in advancing HDR's Behavioral Health sector at the regional, national, and international levels, contributing to a world-renowned healthcare design practice. We are seeking a dynamic leader with deep technical expertise, passion, and influence to support complex behavioral health projects, cultivate client relationships, and strengthen HDR's reputation as a leader in behavioral and mental healthcare design.

The Behavioral Health Principal will be responsible for supporting the growth and success of HDR's Behavioral Health practice by providing subject matter expertise, contributing to thought leadership, and developing new business relationships and opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Behavioral Health Planning and Technical Leadership
  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise on multiple behavioral health projects concurrently across all phases of work.
  • Guide project teams in the planning and design of behavioral health environments that are grounded in evidence-based design, research, and industry best practices.
  • Support design excellence by advancing innovative, effective, and patient-centered solutions for behavioral and mental healthcare settings.
  • Collaborate closely with architectural, engineering, and specialty disciplines throughout all project phases to ensure integrated, holistic solutions that meet project, technical, and client objectives.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to designers and team members to support quality outcomes and knowledge sharing.

Client Development and Strategy

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with behavioral health clients, serving as a trusted advisor and key team member on projects.
  • Support the growth of new and existing client relationships by identifying opportunities to add value through expertise, insight, and strategic engagement.
  • Collaborate with Health Sector Leadership, including the Behavioral Health Director and Regional Health Directors, to advance sector initiatives and strategic priorities.

Industry and Thought Leadership

  • Contribute to thought leadership through participation in research, published content, presentations, and speaking engagements.
  • Actively engage in professional organizations and industry activities that support HDR's vision and strengthen its leadership position in behavioral health.
  • Represent HDR within the behavioral health community at local, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Increase awareness of HDR's behavioral health expertise and capabilities through industry engagement, advocacy, and relationship-building activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture
  • Experience in behavioral health projects as a subject matter expert
  • Registered Architect
  • Familiar with current trends in behavioral healthcare delivery
  • Able to lead a team on projects and make client presentations
  • Experience in successfully developing and executing targeted market and client strategies
  • Desire to work towards the integration of holistic sustainable processes into design projects at early design stages
  • Experience in sustainable and / or regenerative design
  • Experience and understanding of basic building physics, low carbon materials and high-performance design strategies
  • Advanced credentialing desired (e.g. ACHA, LEED, EDAC, etc)
  • Must be willing to travel

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 15 years related experience
  • A minimum of 7 years project management experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, estimating and scheduling software, project management software
  • Must have the ability to interact with various design teams, have excellent organizational, project management and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
