General Description of the Job Class
Perform a variety of tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of diagnostic, therapeutic and life support clinical equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities: Level I
* Perform routine tasks for installation, preventive maintenance, and repair of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment (excluding life support equipment).
* Conduct electrical safety tests using specialized equipment.
* Support systematic preventive maintenance programs.
* Perform incoming inspections and document clinical equipment.
* Deactivate obsolete equipment and follow surplus/salvage protocols.
* Complete special clinical requests as assigned.
* Communicate repair status to user departments and arrange loaner/replacement equipment.
* Troubleshoot and repair assigned clinical equipment.
* Order and receive parts; document shipping and returns.
* Report patient safety issues and assist with corrections.
* Meet individual and team performance standards.
* Maintain professional appearance, clean/safe workplace, and good working relationships.
* Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
* May travel to other facilities as needed.
* Complete required training modules.
* Follow all Health System and departmental policies.
* Maintain devices such as sequential compression devices, portable suction units, suction regulators, HEPA units, PAPR units, kangaroo pumps, heater cooler units, infusion devices.
* Perform other related duties as assigned.
Level II
* Perform all Level I duties and responsibilities.
* Assigned corrective and preventive maintenance for life support equipment.
* Independently perform routine and complex tasks for installation, maintenance, and repair of clinical equipment and integrated systems.
* Serve as a resource for proper operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
* Recommend replacement of obsolete or problematic equipment.
* Prioritize work assignments to meet departmental goals.
* May be required to be on-call and respond per policy.
* Provide guidance and mentoring to Level I technicians.
* Coordinate and manage routine projects with limited supervision.
* Assist with equipment evaluations.
* Participate in Device Incident Investigation and follow up with management.
* Maintain devices such as defibrillators, incubators, transport incubators, patient monitor systems, EEG devices, pacemakers, EMG devices, ventilators.
* Perform other related duties as assigned.
Level III
* Perform all Level II duties and responsibilities.
* Operate independently in a generalist capacity with broad knowledge of multiple types of clinical equipment.
* Coordinate and manage special projects, including equipment installations.
* Perform routine, complex, and specialized tasks for installation, maintenance, and repair of clinical equipment and systems, including life support devices.
* Provide guidance and mentoring to Level I and II technicians.
* Serve as a technical resource to clinical staff regarding patient medical device issues.
* Coordinate inspection and installation of incoming equipment.
* Oversee work performed by service contractors and vendors, including maintenance, calibration, installation, and verification of service documentation.
* Independently manage projects from initiation to completion, including communication and follow-up with construction and clinical departments.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education: Associates Degree in Electronics, Biomedical Equipment Technology, similar field or military equivalent.

Or, two years vocational training may substitute for the degree requirement.

Experience: Level I - No experience required, beyond degree/military/vocational training described above.
Level II - A minimum of two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician is required.
Level III - A minimum of five years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician. CBET or CLES certification may substitute for two years of experience.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: Level I, II, or III - A valid North Carolina Driver???s license with a good driving record.
Level II or III - Qualify as a candidate for certification as a CBET or CLES by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Level I
* Maintenance skills in electronics, mechanical, or electromechanical device repair.
* Knowledge of electronics troubleshooting.
* Knowledge of safety precautions for clinical equipment.
* Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
* Ability to work in a team environment.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
* Competency in using required test equipment for therapeutic and diagnostic equipment.
* Basic knowledge of email and work order processes.
* Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays if necessary.
* Ability to function in a sterile environment if necessary.
* Ability to keep neat and accurate records.
Level II
* All Level I KSAs, plus:
* Ability to work with limited supervision.
* Capable of mentoring Level I technicians.
* Ability to independently troubleshoot equipment, both technically and clinically.
* Significant knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology, especially for clinical application and troubleshooting.
* Significant experience with departmental software (email, database management, spreadsheet, word processor).
* Ability to carry call for team/workgroup, respond per policy, and make decisions regarding emergency equipment repair.
Level III
* All Level II KSAs, plus:
* Broad technical knowledge of diverse clinical and life support equipment.
* Strong project coordination and management skills.
* Advanced troubleshooting and repair capabilities for complex medical devices.
* Ability to mentor and guide junior technical staff.
* Effective communication skills for collaboration with clinical and construction teams.
* Familiarity with inspection protocols and equipment installation procedures.
* Knowledge of vendor and contractor coordination, including documentation verification.
* Understanding of network architecture for clinical monitoring systems.
* Specialized knowledge in a wide range of medical devices
* Ability to serve as a technical advisor to clinical personnel.
