| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The
UNC Institute for the Environment (IE) has a multifaceted mission: (1) To strengthen environmental research capacity across
UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world's critical environmental problems. (2) To work in partnership across
UNC and with external partners to coordinate and deliver 21st century educational programs that provide students with the experience and skills to thrive in a growing global economy. (3) To put new environmental knowledge into action by engaging and serving communities, here in North Carolina and around the world. (4) To fuel and harness the university's sustainability activities through the Sustainable Carolina Initiative |
| Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Center for Public Engagement with Science (
CPES) in the
UNC Institute for the Environment (
UNC-IE) is seeking three (3) undergraduate research assistants. The
CPES collaborates with faculty in environmental health sciences at
UNC-Chapel Hill and NC Central University to support environmental health sciences research.
The Research Assistants will conduct literature reviews on environmental science/health topics; collect and analyze environmental science/health data; contribute to presentations of research findings (including posters and manuscripts); assist in developing and pilot testing educational materials; coordinate logistics and support lab operations, as needed. The Research Assistants will also participate in required research training (such as
CITI training/Group 2: Social and Behavioral Research or training on Rigor and Reproducibility).
The Research Assistant positions are in-person positions whose weekly schedules (Part-time, temporary: 20 to 35 hours/week) are determined in consultation with supervisor. Some weekend and evening work and some off-site travel may be required. The positions are housed within
UNC Institute for the Environment
UNC-IE. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
| Management Preferences |
- Coursework in biological and environmental sciences or public health
- Experience (including as a volunteer) working on environmental science and public health issues
- Experience as a member of a research team, including sharing findings through posters and presentations
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team |
