The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking candidates for a Nuclear Facility Manager (NFM) reporting to the Fuel Fabrication & Nuclear Material Management Division. If you want to be part of enabling nuclear energy research and development, including deployment of next generation nuclear reactors then this position is for you.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for the United States Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, fabrication, irradiation experiment assembly, and post irradiation analysis. MFC plays a pivotal role in supporting the fabrication process development, testing, demonstration, and performance assessment to accelerate the deployment of new, advanced nuclear technology concepts.

The Nuclear Facility Manager (NFM) is responsible for nuclear safety management within their assigned nuclear and/or radiological facilities. Responsible for establishing and presenting a strategic vision for successful nuclear or radiological facility operations, mission accomplishments and implementation of continuous improvements.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Responsible for safe execution of day-to-day activities as well as implementation of safety basis requirements and performance of activities within their approved Authorization Agreement.
  • Implement facility systems, components, operations practices, INL policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership, communication, and coordination for all support organizations addressing nuclear facility issues.
  • Ensure requirements are met for MSAs/RAs/ORRs.
  • Line management responsibilities for all human capital activities for assigned individuals.
  • Work package manager for assigned budgets.
  • Coordinate, support, and when necessary, subcontract work performance in assigned facility.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree plus 7 years relevant experience which could include supervisory and/or technical experience in nuclear facility operations, testing, and maintenance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain and DOE "L" clearance.
  • Good technical knowledge in the areas of mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and instrument and control theory.
  • Considerable skill in oral and written communication, problem-solving/trouble shooting techniques, and coping with emergency situations.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Nuclear Facility Manager Certification
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain RadWorker I or II, as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound judgment decisions through previous work assignments.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or a combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree is acceptable.
  • Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements, particularly environmental requirements, as they apply to facility compliance.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOE nuclear authorization basis requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of nuclear material radiological and criticality hazards and mitigations.
  • A comprehensive level of knowledge of nuclear facility operations which includes: conduct of operations, criticality safety, nuclear safety, administrative requirements for operation, work management, facility operations, abnormal and emergency procedures, system design, construction and their interrelationships.
  • Experience and understanding of security controls for nuclear material.

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is ($107,844 - $274,980): At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
