Responsibilities

Under the supervision and direction of the dispatcher, the primary responsibility is to coordinate and physically transport patients into and within the hospital. The Patient Wheelchair Transporter safely transfers and accompanies patients to and from clinical and support areas utilizing wheelchairs and other mobility devices. In this role, you will also be required to communicate in a professional manner with patients, co-workers and healthcare staff.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    Transports patients by moving them to and from wheelchairs and assisting/lifting patients on and off beds.
  • Properly and safely transports and secures patients, secures IVs, drainage tubes, etc. with assistance from the nursing personnel.
  • In accordance with the transportation of patients, uses wheelchairs to carry out the essential duties of the position.
  • Demonstrates competency in transporting all specific age groups.
  • Ensures the safe, timely and accurate transport of patients to their destination.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, nursing personnel, clinicians, technicians or reception and dispatch.
  • Ensures the comfort of the patient by being attentive. Offers blankets, checks modesty and only engages in appropriate conversation involving patients. Never transports patients in severe pain.
  • Alerts nursing staff immediately to any signs of patient distress.
  • Routinely inspects wheelchairs and immediately reports equipment malfunction.
  • Complies with regulatory agency standards, including federal, state and JCAHO.
  • Adheres to facility and patient confidentiality in accordance with stated policy and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act) requirements
  • Utilizes proper and safe patient handling techniques.
  • Collects wheelchair transport equipment and returns them to the appropriate storage areas.
  • Demonstrates proper use of the patient transport tracking system.
  • Uses appropriate infection control procedures including sanitizing wheelchair transport equipment.
  • Readily seeks to increase job knowledge and participates in continuous training.
  • Demonstrates SP+ service standards for exceptional patient, family and coworker experiences.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education/Experience Required: High School Diploma or equivalent education and/or experience. Prior patient transport or healthcare experience a plus.

Availability to Work: Special shift requirements, if any, will vary depending on a location's hiring needs. If applicable, availability to work 2nd shift, 3rd shift and/or week-ends may be required.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to hospital staff, patients and other employees of the company.

Customer Service Skills: Ability to effectively respond positively and professionally to patient and/or hospital staff requests, inquiries and/or complaints.

Appearance: Employees will be required to maintain a neat and clean appearance and be in complete uniform at all times.

Immunization or Health Screening Requirements: May be required to meet immunization or health screening requirements through providing personal records or undergoing testing and, if required, further immunizations or tests.

Training Requirements: Successful completion of SP+ New Hire and Patient Transporter (PT) courses including on-the-job demonstration of skills.

Other Attributes: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but standard written or oral instructions. Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment; able to deal with change, delays or unexpected events.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Must be able to run, walk, and sit for a long period of time
  • Must be able to push and pull (on wheelchair) 100 to 350 pounds, frequently over a considerable distance.
  • Requires a full range of motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to push or pull heavy objects using up to 75 pounds of force.

Salary Range: $15.00 per hour (+ tips)

This role is eligible to earn tips in addition to the posted hourly rate.
