Position Summary

The Design Drafter II is a mid-level position with progressive skill sets in drafting throughout the submission and production engineering process for window or curtainwall products to gain approval and produce fabrication drawings. Ability to assist in the design from standard, modified standard, or custom profile extrusions/products. Ensure a quality, error-free on time product that is profitable to the company while meeting customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design and Drafting

  • Efficiently generate high-quality drawing/engineering packages that are complete and accurate using AutoCAD, computerized configurator, CTO Edit (bill of materials generator), or other tools as applicable.
  • Produce complete and accurate submission and production packages.
  • Develop submission drawings that are weather-tight, installable, serviceable, and economical.
  • Interpret architectural drawings, contract documents, and specifications.
  • Adhere to Metals' AutoCAD standards and drawing formats.

Project Leadership and Operational Management

  • Act as "Project Lead" to coordinate drawing efforts among multiple engineering associates.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in establishing and maintaining project schedules and requirements.
  • Utilize the electronic filing system for internal and external documentation.
  • Generate "Value Engineering" ideas to reduce project costs.
  • Provide support to Project Managers regarding field issues and direct customer service.

Process Improvement and Professional Development

  • Participate in process improvement initiatives for both engineering and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing floor to incorporate production feedback into designs.
  • Continuously expand knowledge of Architectural Metals and Wausau product lines.
  • Aid in the training and development of Design Drafter I associates.
  • Build a deep understanding of business and manufacturing processes to improve overall efficiency.

Experience & Skills

Education: Associate's Degree in a design or engineering related field required. Education background must include formal AutoCAD training or equivalent software proficiency.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years industry experience related to commercial curtain wall or window products.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to understand contract documents such as specifications and identify possible opportunities or issues.
  • Progressive understanding of architectural or mechanical drawings and contract documents.
  • Progressive skill sets in AutoCAD using Architectural Metals AutoCAD Standards and Drawing formats.
  • Communicate effectively in a verbal and a written manner, and the ability to identify an issue and notify project lead.
  • Mathematical skills in algebra and geometry.
  • The ability to visualize in 3-D.
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Able to stay focused and manage tasks efficiently while working quickly and accurately.
  • Willing and able to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines.
  • Close attention to detail and ability to set priorities.
  • Computer software experience:
    • AutoCAD (or equivalent)
    • 3D software I.E.: Solid Edge, Solid Works, Inventor a plus
    • BlueBeam and/or equivalent PDF reader programs
    • ERP Software - Epicor a plus
    • Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, etc)

Work Environment/Travel Requirements

Mostly an office environment with occasional visits to the manufacturing floor (proper PPE must be worn on manufacturing floor).Occasional travel related to other sites / corporate.
