Starting Salary: $75,336

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, outreach to and engage directly with diverse communities across Chicago to build and maintain relationships between the Chicago Police Department and historically marginalized and underserved communities. The Community Outreach Coordinator may be assigned to serve as a direct liaison between the Chicago Police Department and a specific affinity community in Chicago, such as the LGBTQ+ community, Immigrant and Migrant community, Faith community, Unhoused community, and others.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Serve as a direct liaison between the Chicago Police Department and various affinity communities (e.g., LGBTQ+ community, immigrant and migrant community, faith community, unhoused community), ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

* Support ongoing community engagement and outreach efforts related to the consent decree and police reform initiatives. This includes managing and coordinating the activities of working groups, advisory committees, and stakeholder networks to ensure diverse community representation and participation.

* Facilitate community meetings, workshops, and programs to raise awareness of Chicago Police Department initiatives, programs, and services. These efforts aim to build trust, address community concerns, and promote collaborative problem-solving.

* Develop, create, and maintain working relationships with community-based organizations, advocacy groups, and service providers to enhance the department's outreach capabilities and resource network.

* Conduct regular assessments of community needs and feedback to inform the development of culturally sensitive outreach strategies and programs tailored to each community.

* Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to develop and distribute outreach materials, such as flyers, newsletters, and social media content, to effectively communicate important information and updates to the community.

* Provide training and support to Chicago Police Department personnel on best practices for community engagement, cultural competency, and effective communication with marginalized and underserved communities.

* Monitor and evaluate the impact of outreach initiatives, preparing detailed reports and recommendations for continuous improvement. This includes tracking participation metrics, feedback, and outcomes of community engagement activities.

* Represent the Chicago Police Department at community events, forums, and meetings to build visibility and strengthen community relationships. Actively listen to community concerns and work towards timely and effective resolutions.

* Assists in the identification, development, and implementation of best practices, outreach programs, and community events that increase awareness among stakeholders

* Maintains records and prepares reports of community outreach activities

* Responds to written requests for information on departmental programs, as needed

* Perform other related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Chicago Police Department and its commitment to fostering positive community relations and equitable policing practices

Days: Monday - Friday

Hours: 9:00am - 5:00 pm

Days Off: Saturday and Sunday

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences or a related field plus three (3) years of community or social services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

* A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required

* Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Experience collaborating with diverse communities, including the LGBTQ+ community, individuals with disabilities, immigrants, migrants, refugees, people experiencing homelessness, and members of faith-based groups.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
