Position Summary:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Casual Outpatient Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to provide outpatient clinical care in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. The APP works as a member of a multidisciplinary care team, providing coverage to meet variable staffing needs across the outpatient clinic.

Program Highlights:
  • Coverage role supporting a high-volume cardiothoracic surgery outpatient clinic - filling in for provider vacations, holidays, and planned leave, with the opportunity to cover unplanned absences as availability allows.

  • Practice within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, which performs nearly 2,000 adult cardiac and thoracic procedures annually across coronary, valvular, aortic, structural heart, transplant, MCS/ECMO, and thoracic surgery.

  • Join 12 faculty surgeons (expanding to 15) and a division of 20+ advanced practice providers - including 6 outpatient clinic APPs this role will work alongside - at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital - recognized by Healthgrades among America's 50 Best Hospitals and the only adult Level I Trauma Center in eastern Wisconsin.

  • Sees patients for new surgical consultations, postoperative follow-up visits, and ongoing outpatient management.

  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests; manages prescriptions, prior authorizations, referrals, and care coordination.

  • Documents in the EMR and communicates results and care plans with patients, families, and referring providers.

  • Collaborates with cross-departmental specialty teams and primary care providers in the consultative management of cardiothoracic surgery patients.

  • Prior outpatient experience in cardiothoracic, cardiac, or thoracic surgery preferred, though not required.

Schedule:
  • Monday-Friday, day shift.

  • No evenings, call, or weekends.

  • Schedule driven by planned provider leave; advance notice provided for most shifts.

Qualifications:

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience of 2+ years working as an APP is preferred, not required.

  • Highly desired: previous experience in an outpatient surgical specialty or medicine clinic, such as cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiology, or vascular surgery.

Minimum Education:

  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.

  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Advanced Practice Nurse / Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner

    • Wisconsin RN License

    • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License

    • Certification Requirements:

      • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

      • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

      • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date

    • DEA registration

    • Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization:

      • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP)

      • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)

      • Family NP (FNP)

  • Physician Assistant

    • Wisconsin Physician Assistant License

    • Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

    • Certification Requirements:
