We are looking for an experienced and compassionate
Nurse Manager to lead our Postpartum/Mother Baby Unit and Level IIA Special Care Nursery.
This is an exciting opportunity for a maternal-newborn or neonatal nurse leader who wants to make a meaningful impact in a growing, community-focused maternity program. You will lead talented clinical teams, help shape the patient and family experience, and work closely with nursing and medical leadership to continue advancing high-quality care across the maternal-newborn continuum.
Reporting to the Director of Nursing and partnering closely with the Labor & Delivery Nurse Manager, this role combines
clinical leadership, team development, quality improvement, and operational oversight in an environment where collaboration and frontline voices are valued.
If you are a leader who enjoys being visible, developing others, improving care, and creating an exceptional experience for patients and families, we would love to hear from you.
What You'll Do
Lead and Inspire Your Team
- Provide leadership for the Postpartum/Mother Baby Unit and Level IIA Special Care Nursery, supporting safe and effective 24/7 operations.
- Build a positive, collaborative environment where employees feel supported, respected, and empowered to contribute.
- Recruit, interview, onboard, coach, evaluate, and retain registered nurses, patient care technicians, unit coordinators, and other assigned staff.
- Recognize strong performance, provide meaningful feedback, and support employees through performance development and career growth.
- Promote shared governance and encourage frontline staff to participate in decisions that impact patient care and professional practice.
- Partner with educators and clinical resource nurses to support orientation, competency development, specialty certification, continuing education, and succession planning.
Champion Exceptional Maternal-Newborn Care
- Promote safe, evidence-based, family-centered care for postpartum patients, newborns, and infants requiring Level II special care.
- Support clinical excellence in maternal recovery, newborn assessment and stabilization, infant feeding, bonding, safe sleep, and early recognition of clinical deterioration.
- Ensure appropriate escalation and transfer of patients when a higher level of care is needed.
- Maintain clinical knowledge and provide charge leadership or direct patient care when necessary to support safe operations.
Collaborate Across the Maternal-Newborn Continuum
- Work closely with the Director of Nursing and Labor & Delivery Nurse Manager to align staffing, standards, communication, patient flow, and clinical priorities.
- Partner with obstetricians, midwives, pediatric and neonatal providers, anesthesia, lactation, social work, case management, pharmacy, and other interdisciplinary teams.
- Support seamless communication and coordination throughout the patient's maternity experience.
Drive Quality, Safety, and Innovation
- Use clinical and operational data to evaluate outcomes, identify opportunities, and lead meaningful improvement initiatives.
- Engage staff in quality audits, action planning, practice changes, and ongoing performance improvement.
- Maintain readiness for regulatory and accreditation requirements, including Massachusetts DPH, The Joint Commission, infection prevention standards, and Level IIA Special Care Nursery requirements.
- Collaborate with nursing leadership, educators, and medical staff to develop and update policies, procedures, clinical standards, emergency preparedness plans, and staff education.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow, capacity, access, and the overall delivery of maternal-newborn services.
Manage Daily Operations
- Maintain a visible and accessible leadership presence across the department.
- Lead daily huddles and oversee staffing, assignments, patient flow, and resource allocation based on census, acuity, and staff competencies.
- Develop staffing plans and schedules that support patient safety and operational needs.
- Oversee timekeeping, productivity, supplies, equipment, and departmental resources while maintaining appropriate fiscal stewardship.
- Participate in shared leadership coverage for weekends, holidays, and urgent operational needs.
- Represent the department on hospital committees and organizational initiatives.
