Job Summary

The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist with various assigned duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and make workflow recommendations.


Position Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and specimen collection.
  • Label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
  • Perform decontamination and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture/blood-drawing process and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, as required.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Review and understand physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify all test requisitions and computer labels against the appropriate script to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transportation.
  • Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes.
  • Accurately label specimens and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transportation.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department training sessions.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, as appropriate.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience.
