Hennepin Healthcare is an integrated system of care that includes HCMC, a nationally recognized Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center and acute care hospital. Department: Poison Center
FTE: 0.6 (48 hours per pay period)
Workdays: Monday - Friday and every other weekend
Shift(s): Day/Evening rotation
Shift Length: 8 hours
Location: In-Person

SUMMARY
Under supervision by a pharmacist or specialist in poison information, provides emergency information and treatment recommendations by phone for poison exposures involving substances of a nontoxic or minimal toxic nature; and promote public poison prevention education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Promotes positive customer relations in dealing with patients, visitors, and other employees
  • Responds to telephone calls from the public regarding nontoxic or minor poison exposures: determine the type and severity of each exposure; and recommends initial first aid and treatment advice per poison center guidelines
  • Responds to telephone calls requesting tablet identification, basic poison information and poison prevention questions
  • Performs follow-up calls
  • Accurately records medical case information utilizing computerized data collection software
  • Participates in case review and quality assurance activities
  • Provides public poison prevention education
  • Participates in training of new poison information providers
  • Completes special projects as assigned
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department team to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives
  • Responsible for all intradepartmental communication by staff meeting or in-service attendance and information sent by email. Maintains a working knowledge of the poison center policy and procedure manual
  • Acts consistently with all HRPC policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and refers all calls outside the scope of their position
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 2 years of college education (health and/ or science related studies preferred)
  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program, or Licensed Practical Nurse Program, Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Program

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:
  • Computer skills are required
  • Strong verbal and writing skills
