The successful candidate is responsible for providing the project, financial and risk management necessary to ensure that Duke Energy capital projects that require environmental assessment and remediation are in compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations, accounting standards and practices and corporate environmental policies and procedures. The core business focus will support substation assessments and closures; due diligence for real estate acquisitions and divestitures; Brownfields site identification and tracking; and, provide subject matter expert programmatic regulatory/technical review and consultation to peers and other business units. The position will also support, as needed, legacy projects in the state of Florida related to the assessment and cleanup of soil, sediment, and/or groundwater impacted by petroleum products and/or hazardous substances that were released historically. The projects are driven by complex State and Federal regulatory programs.

Remediation Specific Responsibilities

• Manage all aspects of assigned capital projects that require assessment and remediation including but not limited to: selection of contractors and procurement coordination; project budgeting and financial management; project regulatory strategic planning; project environmental compliance; remediation site assessment and corrective action technical strategy and approach; project documentation and internal reporting.
• Determine and manage project budgets.
• Provide financial summaries to business unit project managers on a routine basis for assessment and remediation scopes.
• Engage Subject Matter Experts and Environmental and Safety Field Support as needed to address specific project needs or circumstances.
• Assist with procurement and other project financial approvals within Delegation of Authority.
• Provide environmental reports for both regulatory compliance and internal customers.
• Ensure work unit goals are achieved.
• Enhance company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating, and scheduling of environmental work activities.
• Accomplish business objectives by supporting routine and special project teams.
• Strive to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skills to ensure that department expectations are met.

Job Responsibilities

• Continues to develop and increase knowledge of the organization, procedures and assigned customers and analyzes and understands intermediate-level information, past practices and business objectives to make appropriate recommendations to management/assigned customers.
• Monitors the practices of assigned organizational EHS area, to facilitate compliance with company and/or regulatory policies and requirements in which to mitigate risks. Examples include providing intermediate-leveled regulatory-required and internal environmental or safety reports, intermediate-leveled support assigned environmental and safety training programs, intermediate-leveled support with the development and maintenance of procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental and safety laws and regulations, and to ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance and helping track regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards. Starts researching, developing, and/or evaluating intermediate-level programs, policies or activities within the discipline they are assigned which have small impact or level of complexity; solves a range of intermediately complex problems and develops solutions using standard-moderate procedures.
• Assists with providing information/consultation to management/assigned customers on existing EHS programs and policies. Examples include serving as an intermediate expert for advanced technical programs and compliance issues and supports company's environmental or safety goals, strategies, programs and processes.
• With assistance from a Senior or above, the incumbent develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental or safety laws and regulations. Helps advanced teammates ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance.
• Assists with tracking basic regulatory changes, basic legislative activities and basic industry standards and helps advanced teammates assists with identifying needed changes to facility's compliance programs.
• With appropriate leadership guidance they may assist with working with federal, state and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy on various internal/external industry committees and teams.
• Develops positive working relationships with peers, customers, employees and management to effectively complete work activities.

Required/Basic Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Science, Health and Safety,, Engineering or Other Related Degree
• In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND 7 year(s) related work experience
• Duke Energy Intern/Co-op Experience.

• Masters degree in Science, Engineering or Health and Safety
• In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience
• Professional Engineer and/or Project Management Professional and/or CSP and/or QEP and/or CHMM and/or CIH and/or Professional Geologist

• 4 Years of experience working on environmental assessment and remediation projects.
• The ideal candidate would have direct experience working on projects subject to enforcement according to Florida Department of Environmental Protection Chapter 62-780 Contaminated Site Cleanup Criteria.
• Firm working knowledge of Florida contaminated site, waste management, and Underground Storage Tank (UST) Programs is a plus.
• Successfully completed hazardous waste operations and emergency response 40-hour training with 8-hour refreshers in good standing per the Occupational Health and Safety Act (see title 29 subpart 1910 section 120 of the United States code of federal regulations).

• Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
• Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard.
• Outside work during all seasons.
• Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
• Field, work site, facility visitation required.
• Vehicle travel involved to field location, typical travel safety factors.
• Occasional mildly-strenuous physical activity (extensive walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladders, etc.).

• Valid driver's license
