The Senior Server Administrator will drive the day-to-day maintenance and operations of on-premises and virtual servers to ensure stability and security of University of California, San Francisco's (UCSF) computing environment. This role will coordinate server needs between a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units. The Senior Server Administrator will act as a technical subject matter expert for Information Technology (IT) colleagues and provide training assistance and technical mentorship. This role will support hypervisor deployment and configuration as well as maintain day-to-day operations of centralized, distributed, physical, and virtual servers.

The Senior Server Administrator will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of UCSF's academic mission. This team member will advance the UCSF's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

This role is expected to support the strategic modernization of UCSF's UNIX platform services, including the transition of AIX-based workloads to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on virtualized infrastructure. The incumbent will provide technical leadership in planning, migration, performance tuning, and operational stabilization of RHEL environments supporting critical healthcare and other Tier 0/Tier 1 applications.

The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including system and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not only for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.

  1. Oversees the installation, configuration, and regular updates of server and hypervisor software to ensure the security and reliability of the virtual environments. Monitors performance and security vulnerabilities to maintain functionality.
  2. Leads configuration and deployment of new servers installing operating systems, establishing network connectivity, configuring storage, and implementing security measures.
  3. Oversees the monitoring of the health and performance of servers on an ongoing basis; selects, maintains, and utilizes monitoring tools to track server resources.
  4. Performs regular maintenance tasks such as applying patches and updates, optimizing server configurations, and ensuring proper backup and recovery mechanisms.
  5. Oversees the planning and implementation of server updates, maintenance, and configuration. Ensures that operations are consistent with university processes and policies. Identifies ways to improve existing procedures. Develops realistic recommendations for technology adoption and communicates recommendations to key stakeholders.
  6. Manages collaboration across the organization, including with vendor partners, to ensure the delivery of high-quality server administration services.
  7. Creates and supports procedures for prioritizing and addressing support escalated issues. Serves as a technical expert for highly complex issues.
  8. Oversees the integrity of platform services and related hardware by providing direction and technical expertise to the configuration and maintenance of server platforms. Facilitates optimization and automation activities.
  9. Develops and implements effective disaster recovery plans and procedures to support 24x7 service reliability and effective emergency response. This includes designing and managing backup systems, conducting regular disaster recovery tests to ensure system resilience, and leading recovery efforts in the event of failures or data breaches to minimize downtime and data loss.

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • 5 years of experience with enterprise server administration with primary focus in IBM AIX on IBM POWER platforms in large-scale production environments.
  • 3 years of experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in enterprise environments.
  • 3 years of experience supporting high availability (IBM PowerHA), clustering, and disaster recovery architectures for mission-critical applications.
  • 3 years of experience managing UNIX (i.e. PowerVM) and other virtualization technologies including logical partitioning and I/O virtualization.
