Organizational Unit Overview
The Office of Medical Education ( OME) is strongly committed to excellence in all aspects of the physician training process. We work closely with our basic science and clinical departments as well as with all administrative units within the medical school to maximize the achievement of our students, and to support our teaching faculty in delivering a curriculum that emphasizes the science and art of medicine. OME is committed to working collectively with the faculty and administration to maintain a learning environment that values every student and facilitates the achievement of their educational goals, including their ability to lead and serve in communities across North Carolina. OME supports the teaching faculty and others in the process of providing an accredited program of undergraduate medical education leading to the MD degree and OME provides leadership in curriculum development, program evaluation, student assessment and medical education research and scholarship.
Job Duties
The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University seeks a collaborative and creative individual for the Associate Dean for Medical Education position. The successful candidate will articulate an innovative curricular vision that supports the mission of the Brody School of Medicine. This will be an At Will, 12 month position.

General Administration of the Office of Medical Education: 40%

  1. Provide leadership and active collaboration with the other offices in the BSOM Department Academic Affairs for meeting the expectations of all relevant accreditation bodies - including Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Contribute to the planning for all accreditation visits and all related data gathering and supportive documentation.
  2. Serve as the primary custodian for policies housed in the BSOM OME and ensure the timely revision and electronic posting of updates.
  3. Provide leadership and administrative support to testing and assessment processes as defined by current OME policies.
  4. Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and support their application to enhance the activities of the BSOM Academic Affairs unit. This currently includes the learning management systems Elentra, Examsoft, the survey tools Qualtrics and RedCap, and web site design. Lead efforts to adopt or modify a chosen technology or learning management system.
  5. Prepare and effectively manage the OME budgets and accounts, ensuring that financial expenditures meet all of the plans and reporting requirements of the University.
  6. Recruit, lead, motivate, and develop OME staff in a way that fosters engagement and high performance. Create and communicate clear performance measures, accountability, and continuing education to develop staff.
  7. Contribute to the planning and delivery of M1-M4 orientation programs.


Curriculum Oversight, Outcomes, Programmatic Development, and Strategy: 40%

  1. Create a vision for the OME and provide leadership for the OME in applying best practices to the design, delivery, and enhancement of the curriculum at BSOM. The Associate Dean for Medical Education is an ex officio member of the Foundational and Clinical Curriculum Committees and a voting member of the Executive Curriculum Committee.
  2. Provide leadership for the systemic review process for each component of the medical education curriculum as defined by current policies.
  3. Provide programmatic support for the educational pipeline efforts designed to enhance student understanding and preparation for the rigors of medical school.
  4. Promote the educational program at BSOM to the University and medical educational community through websites and attendance at regional and national events and meetings.
  5. Direct the medical courses housed in BSOM Academic Affairs and any others as required.
  6. Collect, analyze, and communicate outcomes data related to national benchmarks to course directors, department chairs, curriculum committees, and academic leaders.
  7. Support the faculty development of institutional learning objectives and competencies, map their application to individual courses, and document their attainment.

Other Duties: 20%

  1. Develop pedagogical research projects and resources and facilitate educational research at BSOM.
  2. Provide leadership, administrative support, and oversight for the BSOM Distinction Track Program.
  3. Complete additional responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean for BSOM Academic Affairs.

Position contingent on availability of funding.
Minimum Education/Experience
MD, PhD, DO from an appropriately accredited institution and conferred by the time of hire, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.

Experience in medical education and curriculum, as well as adult learning theory.
Demonstrated experience in curricular design, innovation, and implementation.

Demonstrated experience in improving learner engagement and educational outcomes.

Demonstrated administrative experience, decision-making, and leadership responsibilities at the departmental level or higher.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
If MD, eligible for NC Medical License
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills as well strong management, organizational, and planning skills.
Demonstrated experience working with teams and learners.
Demonstrated experience in building effective teams and strategic planning.
